A Knotty Affair

A Knotty Affair

Kaisar Patel

So there it sat

All round and podgy

At first I’d think it was a tad bit ugly

It was neither round nor protruding

It was simply straight and sat there gaping

On the edge of my wrist where I could see

Sometimes I like that kind of subtlety

It refused to leave me as if by vow

I wanted it to disappear now, just now

As time passed it became a part of me

Like the mound of MohenjoDaro which is a part of History

I would stare at it every now and then

And I applied creams and lotions of varied scents

But there it was just as before

Like the reflection of a bald head on a baldy’s toe

I scratched it hard until it hurt

I even begged it to disappear, like a foolish nerd

But ‘No’ it said as it raised its head

“I’m here for you, my dear mistress.”

So I saw it in the morning and sometimes at noon

I studied it hard from every angle of the room.

Then one day, I accepted it as a friend

I spoke to it for hours on end.

And as days passed I got mighty pleased

With this knot that had once frightened my little niece

My dear ones who were sorry for me

Were now wondering what it could be

As they caught my smiling countenance

Was I indulging in some kind of penance?

I realized how precious the knot was to me

When my daughter applied for a master’s degree

She said she had to leave for greater pursuits

My girl was ready to abandon her roots

My hubby, I’m sure was having a fling

Cause I know that he never blinked a wink

When I kissed the knot goodbye each night

And he kept snoring as he lay by my side

Since then I am having a Knotty affair you see

I am happy to announce it with joy and glee

My knot refuses to budge away from me

And like a silent lover it’s happy to be

Close to my heart, close to my soul

It’s as comforting as a new shoe’s sole

And I wish we remain united till I grow old!!!

Have been a teacher for more than twenty five years now but there is a vagabond in me that surfaces every now and then .The three most important words for me are 'I am here'. I believe in humanity and in humility, in magic and in miracles and of course Shakespeare...cause what's life without a bit of Drama!!!
